**Description**


The Medical Billing Specialist supports Sutter Medical Foundation billing activity by auditing charge postings routinely and identifying areas for billing improvements and controlling billing rejections. Also assists in identifying billing compliance issues by auditing chart notes, operative notes as well


as hospital documentation. Responsible for insuring timely and accurate resolution of billing and coding errors for their assigned region by working with centralized batching areas.


**Qualifications**


**Education/ Knowledge, including Licensure/ Certification/ Registration:**




+ High School Diploma or equivalent, college course work preferred.

+ Certification in physician coding by American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA - CCS-P) or American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC - CPC).





**Knowledge:**


+ Knowledge of ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS coding.

+ Knowledge and understanding of all insurance plans, including government, PPO and capitated plans.

+ Computer billing, problem solving, and accounts receivable proficiency.

+ Knowledge of medical terminology.

+ Must maintain currency with CMS regulatory guidelines, insurance billing requirements, state and federal laws and regulations governing capitated, contractual and administrative write-offs, third party liabilities and bad debt.

+ Ability to function independently, identify problems and implementation of resolutions

+ with minimal direction and guidance.

+ Customer service skills sufficient to interface effectively with managers, clinicians, staff members and patients.

+ Organizational skills sufficient to keep records and recognize inefficient work processes.

+ Requires ability to learn all Care Center & Revenue Cycle related computer functions and billing practices.

+ Understanding of internal audit principles sufficient to support regional care centers.

+ Communicate with physicians effectively regarding billing errors and solutions.





**Experience:**




+ Minimum of 2 years of radiology coding experience preferred.

+ Minimum of 2 years medical group billing/registration experience preferred.

+ Professional experience sufficient to recognize and make appropriate judgment regarding care center billing operational issues.

+ Knowledge of ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS coding.

+ Knowledge and understanding of all insurance plans, including government, PPO and capitated plans.

+ Knowledge of medical terminology.

**Skills:**




+ Proven skill in analyzing situations and making timely decisions in areas of accountability.

+ Typing speed and accuracy at 45 CWPM, allowing for the accurate computer entry of the needed volume of data, and to query accounts while patients are on the phone.

+ Excellent telephone and customer service skills. Ability to present coding and billing information in both large and small group settings.
